Our House Composers - Richard Nye

    Richard Nye BA(Hons) PGCE
Born in 1967 in Gloucester and a chorister at the cathedral there, Richard went on to study music in London. He has, over the last seventeen years, combined a career as a teacher, he is currently Director of Studies at Dumpton School, Wimborne, where he assists in the Music Department and teaches composition with his desire to compose.

During this time he has written for a wide variety of individuals and groups both in the UK and abroad.

He was commissioned by West Sussex County Council to write a large-scale choral and orchestral work for the millennium, premiered at Chichester Cathedral on January 4th 2000.His music was also used during celebrations at the millennium dome.

2006 has seen Richard share a stage with Sir John Tavener (première of ‘From Hambledon’s Ridge’) and the first performance of a new piece, set to words by a 10 year old, was part of a ‘Gloucestershire Composers' Concert held in June and conducted by Stephen Jackson, who also directs the BBC Singers.

Richard has worked with Dr Michael Varner, a member of the percussion faculty at the University of Texas, Arlington, on a new work, 'Susvar', for marimba using the tonal structures and rhythms of India. Susvar will be published by Devilish Publishing.

For the up-and-coming duo Ephyra (Sax and Piano), he wrote 'Cave Paintings' which was premiered at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver in February 2003 and featured on their debut CD, 'Modern Standards' - the group has since commissioned a new work 'Little Creatures' which received its premiere at the Pennine Spring Music Festival in June 2004.

For the last five years, Richard has been associated Piano 40 (previously the London Piano Quartet) and his work '8 'Till Late' (to be published by Devilish Publishing) for eight hands on two pianos features on their recently released debut CD. His second work for the group, 'Online' was premiered at the SBC in 2004. Piano 40 were featured in the Independent on Sunday with a section focusing on both '8 'Till Late' and 'Online'.

"The material is wittily based on touch tones, each representing a different personality, that argue and interact so that a conversation develops between the four pianists."
CJ Schuler - The Independent on Sunday
