Our House Composers - Rudd Vermeij

    Ruud Vermeij
Born in the Netherlands in 1965, Ruud lives in Dordrecht, Holland. At about 8 years old Ruud started to play Cornet in the local Salvation Army youth band. He now plays the Euphonium and occasionally takes the Trombone. Playing the piano is also one of his favourite activities.

Though Ruud studied Electrical Engineering and now is Computer Programmer by profession, he has always been busy studying music for a hobby. Since his teenage years Ruud has been experimenting with writing music. He followed some courses on general musical theory and the theory of harmony, but he mostly developed himself autodidactical by reading books.

In 1993 the Salvation Army published a four part song he wrote. But it took until 2005 that Ruud was inspired to take his composing more seriously. He found a tutor in Nigel Horne who gave him valuable advice in writing for Brass Band.

Ruud is mostly influenced by Salvation Army Brass Band composers, but he also likes to listen to Olivier Messiaen.
