RETROSPECTIVES
Central Ohio Brass Band (remarks by James McFadyen)
Expressive and big start, excellent horns and great blend of cornet tones. A – Smooth solo lines, though not always expressive but directed well. B – Balanced and well directed although ensemble a little clumpy. C/D – ensemble is warm but soloist is heavy-handed. Some tuning issues in lead lines but remedied quickly. E – Very broad sound and very tight. Percussion are excellent here. Trombones blend well and the overall effect is beautiful and expressive.
Overall:
Directed with flair from the front with a broad and expressive ensemble sound. Solo lines not always tender but the impressive direction brings outstanding musical shape and dimension to the music.

Intro – Great opening by ensemble however I’d of liked to have heard the trombones come through more as written. Nice, broad and majestic though – great timp.
A – Intonation off! Ouch!
B – This was better. Attention to dynamics was good. Needed more trombone leading in to C.
C / D – Good sounds coming through, slight intonation issues in parts… I like the interpretation given by the MD.
E – Great playing – Trombones finally pelting there way through this. Ensemble work is tight and sounds just as you’d want to hear it. Rall at the end was probably slightly OTT, but that aside, awesome.
Overall, the interpretation by the MD was great and generally there was a good understanding of what the piece was about. Great ensemble work and a superb ending; just the odd intonation issue. Thank you.

Brass Band Leieland (remarks by James McFadyen)
A light start but has openness. Trombones have real dramatic presence. A – Solo lines are warm and expressive. Euph lines are delivered well. B – Warm ensemble but Trombones are not too subtle. C/D – Ensemble feels weak but trombones are awesome. E – Fantastic trombones but rest of ensemble lacks width and depth of sound.
Overall:
Open and light sound allows individuals to shine but ensemble sometimes lacks depth of sound. Trombones are fantastic throughout.
Brass Band Leieland (remarks by Naomi McFadyen)
Intro – Opening bars ensemble together, great trombones but lacks the majesticness it requires until bar 5 where the playing is broad and majestic; percussion could do with being louder though.
A – Beautifully played.
B – Great playing; don’t know what happened with dynamics in the FF section though? Good work Troms.
C / D - Lovely playing throughout – could feel the passion. More percussion please!! Couldn’t hear scrape and the cymbal roll leading in to E needed more…
E – Was great but the ending wasn’t quite together.
Overall, some great playing and ensemble work was good – needed louder percussion and a needed a good ending that matched the good start. Well done.
