In January 2017, the well-known tune Happy Birthday to You became public domain. To celebrate this, we teamed up with a few of the UK's top arranging talent to produce four brand new free arrangements; each one contributing something different to the next, thus giving bands the flexibility and fun to choose which arrangement to play.

Remembering Simon Kerwin (1961-2018)

Simon Kerwin contributed an arrangement of Happy Birthday to You and it is with great sadness that he died on 7th November 2018. He will be fondly remembered in the banding community, and his compositions and arrangements will live on. Simon's arrangement of Happy Birthday is tastefully cheeky whilst remaining beautifully-crafted. RIP Simon.

Happy Birthday Trivia

Although the exact origins of the song remain a little sketchy, sisters Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill are said to have composed the tune in 1893, under the title Good Morning to All. The lyrics of the modern-day version are:

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear Helen*
Happy birthday to you.

*or Mike, David, Kelly... depending on who's birthday it is!

For the music geeks, the inherent problems of the melodic shape of this song have not gone unnoticed. Ivan Fischer, a celebrated conductor, recorded a video explaining why Happy Birthday is fraught with a few problems, and has proposed his own alterations to Happy Birthday. Please check it out!
