About the Flugelhorn
Contrary to what some belief, the Flugelhorn is not part of the saxhorn family; it was developed in Germany and remains firmly part of the bugle family of instruments. The Flugelhorn is a solo voice within the brass band; the sound is sweet and soft and although neither a cornet or horn sound, the Flugelhorn player is generally sat between the two.
Composer and arrangers for brass band recognise both the sweetness of tone comparable to the tenor horns, the punch articulations comparable to the cornets and its role as either a solo voice or as part of a quartet.
On occasion, the Flugelhorn may be found doubling the 1st Trombonist, providing added silk and sustain to the top note of a chord in the lower band.
